Liebert NXC Three-Phase UPS Canada — Service, Batteries & Migration
Liebert NXC three-phase UPS service across Canada — battery strings, capacitor service, parallel-system support. NX, NXC and migration to current-generation Vertiv EXM.
Liebert NXC three-phase UPS service across Canada — battery string replacement, capacitor service, parallel-system support, migration planning to Vertiv EXM. The Liebert NXC is the mainstream enterprise three-phase UPS for Canadian hospital essential-electrical rooms, federal and provincial data centres, mid-sized colocation suites, Crown-corporation primary IT and Tier-1 financial-services secondary data halls. We service every NXC generation from 10 kVA up to 200 kVA in single and paralleled configurations.
Liebert NXC lineage
The NXC inherits a long Liebert three-phase lineage. The original Liebert NX shipped under Emerson Network Power and remains under load in older Canadian hospital and government essential-electrical rooms. Liebert NXC superseded NX with improved efficiency and Vertiv-era management cards. The current-generation replacement is the Vertiv EXM, which carries the same operational footprint but adds ECO-mode efficiency and lithium-ion battery options. We service every step of that lineage — NX → NXC → EXM — including spare-parts support for NX where the secondary market still has inventory.
Liebert NXC capacities we service
- Liebert NXC 10–20 kVA — entry three-phase tower for small data rooms, hospital secondary rooms, edge POPs.
- Liebert NXC 30–40 kVA — mid-range, common in regional government IT and mid-sized colocation suites.
- Liebert NXC 60–80 kVA — enterprise tier, hospital primary essential-electrical rooms, financial-services back-office data halls.
- Liebert NXC 100–120 kVA — larger enterprise data centre footprint, paralleled-system common at this tier.
- Liebert NXC 160–200 kVA — top of the NXC range, hyperscale-adjacent edge sites, Tier-1 bank trading-floor primary protection.
What we service on the Liebert NXC
Battery string replacement
NXC systems use battery strings of 32 to 40 sealed lead-acid 12 V batteries wired in series, sized per the customer’s autonomy requirement. String replacement is invasive work — the realistic procedure is:
- Transfer the system to maintenance bypass (load runs on raw utility during the swap)
- Open the battery breaker and verify zero DC voltage at the string
- Disconnect and remove the old string — each battery is 30 to 50 lb, two technicians on the heavier sizes
- Install the new string with torque-spec terminal connections and inter-cell links
- Polarity verification before closing the battery breaker
- Restore from bypass, run an automatic charge cycle and battery acceptance test
- Provide written test results and an old-battery disposal certificate for facility audit files
Typical service window: four to six hours for a single cabinet, eight to ten hours for paralleled systems with shared battery rooms. We coordinate the outage window with the customer’s facility team and provide written sign-off on completion.
Capacitor service
NXC DC-bus capacitors and AC-output capacitors degrade after five to seven years. A failing capacitor is one of the most common causes of inverter or PFC faults on the platform. We perform scheduled capacitor inspection and replacement during preventive maintenance visits, ideally before the alarm fires.
Inverter, PFC and rectifier fault diagnosis
The most common emergency call we receive on NXC is the Inverter Fault or PFC Fault alarm with the system transferred to bypass. Causes range from a single failed IGBT module to a control-board failure to an overload event that the system flagged for inspection. We diagnose and repair on-site with full module-level support where parts remain available, and we provide a recommendation when the repair economics tip toward an EXM migration instead.
Parallel-system support
NXC systems are commonly deployed in N+1 or 2N parallel configurations for redundancy in hospital essential-electrical rooms and Tier-1 financial data halls. Adding modules to an existing parallel system, troubleshooting load-share imbalance, reconfiguring the static bypass synchronization, and verifying the redundancy after a maintenance event all require NXC-specific expertise. We have it.
Preventive maintenance
For typical Canadian hospital and data centre NXC deployments we recommend:
- Quarterly PM visits — visual inspection, battery internal-impedance check, capacitor inspection, control-board firmware review, log review for trend analysis (four per year)
- Annual battery string load test — full discharge under controlled load with autonomy verification (one per year)
- Capacitor swap — scheduled every five to seven years preventively, before failure
- Battery string replacement — every five to seven years for sealed lead-acid; longer for lithium-ion where the customer has converted
Common deployment contexts
- Hospital essential-electrical rooms — surgical-suite UPS, MRI and CT imaging modality protection, EHR application servers, pharmacy refrigeration.
- Federal and provincial data centres — Shared Services Canada facilities, provincial IT corporations, Crown corporations.
- Tier-1 financial services — bank trading-floor primary protection, payment-processing back-office, brokerage-system continuity.
- Colocation suites — regional colos under 50 racks, multi-tenant data centres with dedicated UPS per customer suite.
- Public safety and command centres — 911 dispatch, emergency-management operations, police and fire dispatch backup.
- Telecom MSC — mobile-switching-centre backup, regional ISP head-end protection.
End-of-service NXC and migration to Vertiv EXM
Liebert NXC remains supportable but Vertiv positions the current-generation Vertiv EXM as the replacement platform for new builds and major refreshes. EXM carries the same NXC operational footprint — paralleled redundancy, modular battery cabinets, the same family of management cards — and adds ECO-mode efficiency that reduces electrical losses by several percent at typical load factors, plus optional lithium-ion battery cabinets with eight-to-ten year service intervals. We plan NX-to-NXC and NXC-to-EXM migrations with phased commissioning that keeps the existing load protected throughout.
