What we service on the Liebert APS

Hot-swap battery module replacement

The APS battery cabinet design lets us replace individual battery modules under load, without dropping the protected bus. Procedure: verify the failed module via the front-panel display or RDU webcard, confirm system redundancy is intact, open the module circuit breaker, slide the module out, allow capacitor discharge, insert the new module, close the breaker, run battery test. Where the entire string is past service life, we replace the full cabinet in a scheduled maintenance window with bypass transfer.

Power-module replacement and capacity scaling

The APS architecture treats power modules the same way as battery modules, each 5 kVA module is field-replaceable under load, and you can scale capacity by adding modules to an empty bay. We perform module additions during scheduled visits when a customer is growing past 10 or 15 kVA and wants to defer the larger APS-to-APM migration. Where the chassis itself is paralleled with another APS, we reconfigure the load-share controls and verify static-bypass synchronization.

Static-bypass and rectifier work

APS systems run a centralized static bypass and rectifier outside the modular bays. These components are not field-swappable in the same way as the modules, when the static bypass or rectifier fails, we transfer to maintenance bypass and perform the swap with the load on raw utility. This requires a planned outage window, typically four to six hours.

Preventive maintenance

For Canadian data centre and telecom-edge environments, semi-annual visits are standard: load test at rated capacity, battery internal-impedance check per module, capacitor inspection on power modules and on the centralized DC bus, fan-acoustic and thermal-imaging inspection, control-board firmware review, and a written report for SOC 2 or audit files.

Migration path, Liebert APS → Liebert APM

The APS hits a hard ceiling at 20 kVA in a single cabinet. Where load growth pushes past that point, typical when a colocation suite adds racks, when a hospital adds an imaging modality, or when a provincial IT room consolidates onto a single footprint, the standard migration is to Liebert APM. The APM scales from 30 to 300 kVA in a single line-up with the same hot-swap module philosophy, so the operational pattern your team already knows from APS carries forward. We plan APS-to-APM migrations with a transition cabinet stage to keep the existing load protected while the new system commissions.

End-of-service Liebert APS

Vertiv has retired the APS line from active production in some Canadian regions and the spare-parts pipeline is finite. Where you have an APS approaching end-of-service, the realistic options are: maintain on existing parts inventory with our extended-support service, migrate to APM for the same modular philosophy at larger capacity, or step laterally to a non-modular three-phase like Liebert NXC if the room is being right-sized rather than scaled up. We assess the right path during a site visit.
