Liebert APM Modular Three-Phase UPS Canada — Service & Batteries

Liebert APM modular three-phase UPS service across Canada — hot-swap power and battery modules, parallel-system support, Tier III / Tier IV data centre work.

Liebert APM modular three-phase UPS service across Canada — hot-swap power module replacement, battery module service, capacity scaling, parallel-system reconfiguration and Tier III / Tier IV data centre maintenance. The Liebert APM is Vertiv’s flagship modular three-phase platform — 30 to 300 kVA in a single line-up, hot-swap power and battery modules, designed for high-availability environments where downtime windows are zero or near-zero. APM protects Canadian Tier III and Tier IV data centres, hyperscale edge sites, primary trading-floor halls, hospital primary essential-electrical rooms and federal-government command centres.

Liebert APM configurations we service

  • Liebert APM 30–60 kVA — entry modular tier, two to four power modules in a single cabinet, common in regional data centres and government secondary rooms.
  • Liebert APM 90–120 kVA — mid-range, paralleled-cabinet common at this tier, used in hospital primary essential-electrical rooms.
  • Liebert APM 150–200 kVA — enterprise tier, multi-cabinet line-ups, federal-government data centres and Tier-1 financial primary data halls.
  • Liebert APM 240–300 kVA — top of the APM range, hyperscale-adjacent edge sites, large colocation suites, Tier III/IV redundancy configurations.
  • Liebert APM battery cabinets — modular hot-swap battery design, internal and external cabinets, sealed-lead-acid and lithium-ion options per generation.

What we service on the Liebert APM

Hot-swap power module replacement

The APM architecture is the reason high-availability Canadian customers chose this platform — every power module is field-replaceable under load, without dropping the protected bus. Procedure: verify the failed module via the front-panel display or RDU webcard, confirm system redundancy is intact (N+1 or 2N), open the module circuit breaker, slide the module out, allow capacitor discharge, insert the replacement module, close the breaker, verify load-share rebalance. Where the failure is intermittent, we run thermal imaging and event-log analysis to isolate the root cause before pulling the module.

Hot-swap battery module replacement

Battery modules in the APM follow the same hot-swap philosophy. Individual battery modules replace under load with redundancy intact. For full-string replacement at end of service life, we coordinate a scheduled maintenance window with bypass transfer — typically four to six hours for a single cabinet, longer for paralleled systems. Sealed-lead-acid string life is three to five years under typical Canadian data centre conditions; lithium-ion cabinets (where deployed) extend that to eight to ten years.

Parallel-system reconfiguration and capacity scaling

APM systems are commonly deployed in paralleled cabinets for capacity and redundancy. Reconfiguring a parallel line-up — adding a fourth cabinet to a 3-cabinet array, converting from N+1 to 2N redundancy, splitting a single bus into A-side and B-side feeds — requires APM-specific commissioning expertise. We perform these reconfigurations with phased commissioning that keeps the existing load protected throughout.

Static-bypass, rectifier and main-controller service

The centralized static bypass and main controller are not field-swappable under load the way power and battery modules are. When these components fail or need service, we transfer to maintenance bypass and perform the work with the load on raw utility. This requires a planned outage window. We coordinate with the customer’s facility team well in advance and provide a written runbook for the outage.

Tier III / Tier IV preventive maintenance

For Canadian Tier III and Tier IV data centres running APM as primary protection, we run a structured preventive maintenance program:

  • Quarterly visits — visual inspection, thermal imaging of every module, battery internal-impedance check, control-board firmware review, log review for trending faults
  • Semi-annual deep PM — load test at rated capacity per module, capacitor inspection on the centralized DC bus, static-bypass synchronization verification, redundancy validation
  • Annual battery load test — full string discharge under controlled load with autonomy verification
  • Battery refresh — sealed lead-acid every five to seven years, lithium-ion every eight to ten
  • Audit-ready documentation — written reports tied to Uptime Institute, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance evidence files

Common deployment contexts

  • Tier III / Tier IV data centres — hyperscale-adjacent edge sites, multi-tenant colocation primary protection, enterprise private cloud infrastructure.
  • Tier-1 financial services — bank trading-floor primary protection, brokerage low-latency infrastructure, payment-processing primary data halls.
  • Healthcare primary essential-electrical — large-hospital surgical-suite and ICU UPS, Health-Authority centralized data centres, multi-site clinical network protection.
  • Federal and provincial primary IT — Shared Services Canada primary data centres, provincial-IT-corporation flagship facilities, defence and public-safety command centres.
  • Hyperscale edge — content-delivery edge nodes, cloud-provider regional infrastructure, telecom-network core MSC.
  • Industrial high-availability — mission-critical process control, automated production-line protection, pipeline and grid SCADA primary protection.

Why APM needs specialist service

Unlike single-cabinet UPS systems, the APM is N+1 redundant by design. The system keeps running when individual modules fail — which means battery and power-module faults can go unnoticed for weeks if no one is reading the logs. Regular preventive maintenance is the only reliable way to catch a failing module before another module fails on top of it, leaving the customer with no redundancy at exactly the wrong moment. Our PM contracts include the module-by-module testing the APM platform requires for honest redundancy reporting.
